About
Sebha, the capital of the Fezzan region, is home to numerous archaeological and historical landmarks. Among the most prominent are the ancient Sebha Fortress and the historic cities of Al-Jadeed Al-Qadimah, Hajarah Al-Qadimah, and Al-Qurda Al-Qadimah. These sites stand as remarkable examples of traditional architectural heritage, where the present seamlessly intertwines with the rich legacy of the past. Their narrow alleys, open courtyards, and intricate corridors reflect the cultural depth of successive civilizations. As such, they serve not only as tourist attractions but also as significant historical references that embody the spirit of various historical epochs.
Tourism in Southern Libya (Fezzan)
Fezzan is considered one of Libya’s most significant tourist regions, renowned for its archaeological wealth and captivating desert landscapes. The region offers a unique blend of cultural history and natural beauty, attracting tourists, scholars, and enthusiasts of prehistoric rock art and traditional desert arts such as the authentic Marskawi style.
Among the region’s historical desert settlements is a Ghat city that served as a hub of Saharan civilization for centuries. It features a mosque dating back over 900 years, and its cultural festivals continue to draw visitors interested in local heritage and traditional music, crafts, and storytelling passed down through generations.
Southwest of the region lies the Akakus Mountains (also known as Tadrart Akakus), a majestic chain of rocky formations within the Libyan Sahara. These mountains were recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1985 due to their remarkable natural features and vast array of prehistoric rock art. Visitors can explore colorful sand dunes, stone arches, and ancient engravings depicting early human life, animals such as giraffes and elephants, and scenes from civilizations that thrived thousands of years before the Common Era.
Adding to the appeal of southern Libya is the annual Fezzan Rally, hosted in the city of Sebha. This desert motorsport event welcomes drivers and riders from both Libya and abroad. The rally spans over 250 kilometers, beginning at Independence Square in central Sebha, passing through the picturesque Lakes Area, and concluding near the town of Tuwewa close to Ubari. The event showcases the region’s diverse terrain and promotes desert adventure tourism while highlighting the vibrant cultural spirit of Fezzan.
